Social Events

SAMOS is a unique conference. It deals with embedded systems (sort of) but that is not what makes it different. It brings together every year researchers from both academia and industry on the quiet and inspiring northern mountainside of the Mediterranean island of Samos, which in itself is different. But more importantly, it really fosters collaboration rather than competition. Formal and intensive technical sessions are only held in the mornings. Afternoons and evenings are reserved for informal discussions, good food, and the inviting Aegean Sea. The conference organizes a number of social activities to bring together the attendees. These activities are described in the following. Additional information, including the bus schedule, will be given during the conference.

  1. Boat Tour and Beachnote by Prof. Yale Patt
    July 17, 2017

At the end of the technical sessions in the morning, the buses leave from the conference venue to the hotels in Kokkari and, then, to the Pythagorio Harbor. The afternoon program includes a tour by boat (look for the boat of ‘Captain Yiannis’ in the harbor) to reach a beautiful remote part of the island, where Prof. Yale Patt will give his beachnote. Videos of the past beachnotes can be seen here (a beachnote is a keynote without audio/visual support held in an outdoor classroom, a beautiful beach on the Samos island, in this case).

  2. Psili-Ammos
    July 18, 2017

At the end of the technical sessions in the morning, the buses leave from the conference venue to the hotels in Kokkari and, then, to Psili-Ammos, one of the two sandy beaches in the island. Psili-Ammos is also the closest point on the island to Turkey. The afternoon program does not include any formal activity and the attendees are free to enjoy the great sea and tasty food from the local restaurants.

  3. Conference Dinner and 'Stamatis Vassiliadis Best Paper Award'
    July 19, 2017

The conference dinner will be organized in the village of Agios Konstantinos (restaurant To Kyma). During the dinner, the Stamatis Vassiliadis Best Paper Award will be assigned to the authors of the best paper selected by the award committee.

  4. Hiking to Manolates
    July 20, 2017

On the last day of the conference, the conference program does not include any technical session. The program includes a walk to Manolates, one of the most picturesque and old villages of Samos. This beautiful village consists of narrow alleys, stone built houses and small squares bordered with traditional taverns and nice cafeterias. Lunch will be organized in the tavern Lukas.
